Vocabulary

Words, Words, Words...and their meanings.

As a nation, our vocabulary scores are low. Our students/learners need to be exposed to words more often, new words, words that are beyond simplified/basic terms. Our duty is to expose them to richer words and to promote richer texts for reading opportunities.

Repeat After Me... I will not allow my students to use the words: said, very, good, awesome, bad, sad.....We can do better than that!

Vocabulary Tools: Word walls, Vocabulary Flash Cards, Vocabulary Word/Meaning Matching Games, Mini Word Walls for Small groups, Wear-A-Word Activity, Vocabulary Parade

*Vocabulary Parade: A wonderful way to celebrate vocabulary and the learning of words is to have a Vocabulary Parade. You can have a parade for you individual classroom, a grade level parade, or an entire campus parade. The purpose of the parade/event is to get students involved and interested in words and building their vocabulary. 1.) Plan a date for the parade in advance of the event. 2.) Assign or let students Choose a vocabulary word they would like to focus on. 3.) Students make a costume or dress up as their word. (Could be full costume or maybe just a t-shirt) (Parents are Welcome to Help!) 4.) Student will come dressed as their vocabulary word on the day of the event; they are to tell others what word they are and what they mean! 5.) Students will walk in a single line around their classroom or in the hallways of the school or outside around their school building...OR all of the above!

*Wear-A-Word Activity- Students wear a laminated card around their necks. A vocabulary word is written on one side and the meaning can be placed on the back. Other students/people can ask students the meaning of the word they're wearing, students should have the meaning memorized. Word Cards can be traded the next day until students have worn/memorized various vocabulary words.

*Individual Mini Vocabulary Word Walls for your Small Group Instruction Times. They are made from a piece of large construction paper, write Word Wall at the top, laminate so you can write/erase after use.
I would use my individual word walls to teach students unfamiliar words from the book I was using with the small group. If I had 4 different small groups reading at 4 different levels, each group would be reading a different book, learning different vocabulary words.

*Dictionaries or an online dictionary should be accessible to students in their classroom.

*A richer vocabulary leads to more advanced comprehension and writing skills.
