Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is a part of phonological awareness in which listeners are able to hear, identify and manipulate phonemes (individual sounds) in spoken words.
Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound that can differentiate meaning.
Phonemic Awareness helps students spell, improves student word reading and comprehension.
How do we develop Phonemic Awareness?
  • Identify and categorize sounds
  • Blend sounds to form words
  • Delete or add sounds to form new words
  • Substitute sounds to make new words
Phonemic Awareness Skills:
  • Blending: What word am I trying to say? Mmmm-aaaa--t.
  • Segmentation (first sound isolation): What is the first sound in mat?
  • Segmentation (last sound isolation): What is the last sound in mat?
  • Segmentation (complete): What are all the sounds you hear in mat?
