Guided Reading and Small Group Instruction (SGI)

It is likely you will have students at various reading levels in your classroom.

Instructing our students at their current Reading Level...a Best Practice.

Step 1: Assessment of students' skills/level (ask your school/
district what you will use)

Step 2: Level Grouping
~ Struggling Readers, OnTarget Readers, Advanced Readers
~ You may have 3, 4, 5, etc. Leveled Groups
~ Groups could be organized by: Colors, Numbers, Letters, Shapes, Animals
~ SGI - Small Group Instruction (4-5 students w/similar needs/skills, taught together)...
no more than 5 in a small group.

Step 3: Schedule: How often do you meet with the groups?
Struggling Readers-(4-5 days a week)
OnTarget Readers- (3-4 days a week)
Advanced Readers-(1-2 days a week)

Step 4: Materials/Resources to Use at Group Time:
*Struggling Readers may be 1-2 years behind (you
may use materials from the grade level below)
*OnTarget Readers are "on grade level" (use materials
at their current grade level)
*Advanced Readers may be 1-2+ years above grade
level (use books, novels, etc. at the grade levels above)
Other Materials: Site Word cards or games, whiteboards/ipads, pointers for tracking words, vocabulary word cards, small group word walls, sticky notes

Step 5: Record Keeping/Monitoring
Keep track of your students/groups progress with a notebook or template form to track what objects/focuses students/groups are working on. Note what reader or novel each group is reading, what vocabulary words they are working on or skill that you are focusing on with them.
*This is a wonderful tool for yourself, your administrator, or for parent-teacher conferences.

*RESOURCES:
TPRI.org has great tools to assist with GR leveling - Leveling Mats. (Free)
Reading a-z - Leveled, printable books to use in your various leveled, small groups.

ENVIRONMENT:
Guided Reading/Small Group Instruction can take place in different manners within your classroom.
Some teachers have a small table (kidney, rectangle, etc) where they hold sessions...others have sessions on rug on the floor. Materials are usually stored close to the teacher in drawers, boxes, baskets, etc.
*I liked to have a table that backed up to a whiteboard so I could use the board for instruction. I usually had 4 containers to store my 4 small groups instructional materials/leveled books in. I created 4 vocabulary lists...one for each group. It was made from a large piece of construction paper, titled Vocabulary Words at the top, then laminated so I could write on/wipe off. I always had lots of wipe-off markers, pencils, highlighters, white painters gloves for the students to use as erasers, sticky notes etc. I used ReadingA-Z a lot to obtain leveled readers for my groups. This company has a huge selection of books you can print off to use in class or send home.
Guided Reading/Small Group Instruction Time was my favorite part of my day!
