Terminology & Vocabulary for Educators

Reading Comprehension-the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. 
Efferent Reading- Reading to Learn. (Informational/Nonfiction Text) - Lots of Notetaking/Coding.
Aesthetic ReadingReading for Entertainment. (Fiction Text) - Notetaking/Coding when necessary.
Explicit teaching- instruction that is stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt.

Fluency the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. 
-Rate - the speed at how quickly one reads.
*wpm-Words Per Minute (the number of words a student can read in a length of 60 sec.)
*wcpm-Words Correct Per Minute (the number of words a student reads correctly in 60 sec.)
   (wpm minus errors)
-Accuracy -the ability to read without making mistakes. Words Correct Per Minute (wcpm)

Intervention -materials, programs or tutoring sessions to intentionally raise or improve students knowledge, scores.
SGI- Small Group Instruction - teaching students in groups of no more than 6.
Blended Learning - Humans (teachers) plus technology to teach students.

ARDAdmission, Review, and Dismissal. It is the Texas name for the group of people who make educational decisions about a student in special education services. The purpose of the ARD meeting is to provide an opportunity for parents and educators to discuss and develop an educational program for the student (the I.E.P.)
Bilingual - a student who can speak two languages. This term should not be associated with Spanish only in schools. Bilingual refers to (a program) in the education setting.
BIP- Behavioral Improvement Plan
Dyslexia- served under 504 program not special education services
504 - (not special education) Section 504 is a federal law that protects students with disabilities from being discriminated against at school. It requires the school to give a student the same opportunities as students without disabilities who go to school. The school does this through a "reasonable accommodation or modification". Students who may be served under 504 - dyslexics, diabetics, attention deficit.
ELAR - English Language Arts and Reading
ELPS - English Language Proficiency Standards.
IEP - Individualized Education Program - an education plan for students being served in special education services.
ESEA - The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon Baines Johnson.
ESL -English as a second language (A program).
LEP-Limited English Proficiency -This means persons who are unable to communicate effectively in English because their primary language is not English and they have not developed fluency in the English language. (Not a program)
LPAC Language Proficiency Assessment Committee - The group of people who make decisions regarding the education of LEP students.
NCLB - No Child Left Behind
OPC -optical character recognition
PDAS- Professional Development and Appraisal System - the evaluation system for teachers.
SBEC - State Board for Educator Certification (Texas)
TEA- Texas Education Agency
TEC-Texas Education Code
TEKS-Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills-the state standards for what students should be able to do.
TELPASTexas English Language Proficiency Assessment System - An assessment program for students in Texas public schools who are learning the English language. 
UIL - University Interscholastic League - an organization that creates rules for and administers almost all athletic, music, and academic contests for public primary and secondary schools in the American state of Texas.
STAAR-State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness
TPRI - Texas Primary Reading Inventory- a reading assessment given to students in grades K-3 (not used by all districts). This test is given 3 times a year. BOY Beginning of Year, MOY Middle of Year, EOY End of Year
